Blog Assignment 7

I was reading “The publication of Your Personal Profile” written by Megan Ramirez from Arak Anthology.

The author argues about do “Facebook” and “Myspace” protect customers’ profiles well. Although there are some ways to prohibit other people to see those pictures or profiles, it is very dangerous if people publish some secrets on websites. People may think websites like “Facebook” and “Myspace” are a good way to communicate with each other, but the author indicates that “Facebook” and “Myspace” may disclose the secrets. And the author list the most common and significant aspects of this effects.

The author uses examples to illustrate her whole opinion towards post personal profile online.

Employers use “Facebook” and “Myspace” to observe employees-to-be. The author lists an example which was happened in University of Delaware to demonstrate her point.

I think this essay is very persuasive. Because the author quotes a lot of researches and gives us a lot of real evidences, such as the resident assistant of University of Delaware posted some pictures on Facebook to show that they were doing something illegal, so the staff of University of Delaware found that and polished them. The author also makes others examples to persuade the audience to believe her point of view.

The role of quotations

In the third issue called: A way with Words, or away with words: Effect of texting and IMing on Language of Arak Anthology, the author uses a lot of quotations and paraphrase to make his essay more reliable and more convincible.

There is one example of quotation in this essay. In the fourth paragraph, the author quotes a sentence from the booked called: Linguistic Ruin? LOL! Instant messaging and teen language, which is written by Sali A Tagliamonte and Derek Denis. This sentence is to illustrate that people often use abbreviations and short forms to text messages, but the fact is these forms are far from the truth and may confuse people in some way. The writer chose to quote this sentence here was to use some data to convince people and make his opinion easier for readers to understand. This quotation shows the idea that the author wants to show us, that is there are some drawbacks if you text someone in abbreviation forms.

The example of paraphrase in this essay is in the beginning of the tenth paragraph. The author quotes the “Gr8 Txtpectations: The creativity of Text Spelling.”, which is written by Tim Shortis. This quotation begins a new idea about whether should we text in non-standard spelling. The author quotes this source here because he wants to begin the topic about the poetic examples, which is also a kind of non-standard English, had been widely-used.

Blog Assignment 5

In the end of 19th Century, China was going through a hard time.

Japanese had become stronger and stronger during the 19th century. So the government of Japan wanted to expand the strength and influence in the world. In the 1894, Sino-Japanese war was broke out. After three stages of war, tons of Warships sink, masses of warriors died with honor, Qing Dynasty failed. As a winner, Japan force Chinese government to sign some unequal treaties, the Treaty of Shimonoseki. The signing of the treaty deepened the semi-colonial society of China; it had also made an important turning point of China’s modern national consciousness.

As a loser, China didn’t look back to Correct deficiencies made by the government. On the Contrary, China was becoming worth and worth. More wars happened and more unequal treaties were signed. Chinese just thought they got the ability to win other countries.

Few decades of years passed, Historians finally began to analysis the mistake. First, there were no ability to foreseen there will be some dangerous, and we must always prepare for the worst. Furthermore, we cannot rely on negotiations. And waiting for other countries’ help didn’t make any sense too. Last but not means the least, we cannot always think about giving up.

In conclusion, loser don’t mean lose anything if you continue correcting your drawbacks.

Blog Assignment #4

When I first came to America as a University student-to-be, I was very curious about everything. I have expected for this brand-new experience for a long time. But when the plane landed in Philadelphia, I feel very frustrated. That was totally different from what I thought before. I felt it was just like a nightmare when you look around in a totally strange environment; there are no one really wants to talk to you. I missed all my friends and families in that time.
That’s why I can totally understand that why Liu need to make friends with other Chinese, because only Chinese share the same culture. Although I have some American friends who are very friendly and warm-hearted, we have totally different thought towards love, friendships, and family. We hardly ever share our worries because we know that we will have different way to deal with the problems. And we are not together for all days. But in China, friends always be together, share their annoyance and happiness, help each other to solve their worries.
For my first three days in the US this time, I felt so in need of Chinese friends so I won’t try to figure out how I can describe the problem. I don’t believe I can describe the problems exactly. If there is someone who has the same culture background as me, I will feel like home. It’s like brotherly love.
When people are in another country, they will become more united because they all come from one country, and this country is their home.

Blog Assignment 3

There are masses of ways to communicate each other, and there are a lot of discrepancy between countries and counties.

For example, the "body bubbles".

In my country, China, usually we don’t care about distance we should keep. There was a story happened to my friend. When she first time came to US, she met a couple with a little baby in the baby-stroller. Sometimes when we think a little kid is very cute, we will touch his or her face and say, ”How cute you are!” So my friends just touch the baby’s face and commend the baby’s out-looking. Then the parent looked at her unhappily. My friend was totally confused. As time goes by, she realized that that action is very impolite to someone you don’t know.

That is the big difference between the United States and China.

There is also another difference. The first time I came to the United States in Phoenix, Arizona, Everyone was smiling to me, even if we never met before and probably won’t meet. But in China, every people who walk on the road will show a porker face to others. If you smile to everyone, they may think you are a freak.

Every country has its own culture and own custom.

If you are scared of someone, you are not dare to look his or her eyes directly. That’s the common rule in both China and the United States. Liars may worry about if people can read their secrets. So if you talk to some people but do not look in their eyes, they may think you are impolite, you are unconfident, or you are a liar.

In conclusion, body language is one of the most ways to communicate people. Even a small gesture can cause a big conflict.

Blog Assignment 2

Option 3
Have you ever formed a first impression of someone that eventually proved to be completely wrong? Do you know of any occasion when someone formed an impression of you that was completely wrong?

People always judge a book by its cover. But the truth is we often got the wrong informations.

Just like when I was still in high school, I went to party held by my best friend to celebrity her birthday in Chengdu, in China. She introduced me to one of her friends which has curve brown hair and was wearing a baggy cloth. The first impression I've got is "This is a bad-tempered boy who must be very arrogant" I began to hold prejudice to him when I first saw him. But when I spent more time with him, I found that he was a really cute guy, he is quite shy and very polite to the elders. And when I talked to him I knew that his hair is nature curve and brown, not like most of Asian people.

So it is completely wrong to judge a people by his or her outlooks and wearing. My friend is a little bit shy, he didn't act as Dr. Leonard Zunin said, as a self-confident man, didn't show he is a well liked boy and didn't show his attractive personality, but that doesn't means he is not a nice guy. It can only shows that he is not a boy with good social ability.

Some people may look at the appearance of you to judge you what kind of person you are, some of them may look at your body language, or the way you dress. But these can't really show what kind of person you really are. Because you may over-react in some special situations and other people may have a bad impression and can't change easily. That's really unfair but it is the human distinct. The only way you can do to make a good first impression to other people is to be confident, happy and friendly, just like author mentioned.

It is very important to make a good impression to people. If we can notice more about that, we can make more friends and become more popular.

Reading review

I live in a multi-culture  family. My father comes from LiaoNing, which is in the Northeast of China. My mother is also from the Northeast of China but different country.  But I was born and grown up in the southwest of China - Sichuan
Different Provence get different dialect.  So when I was at school, all my classmates and teachers speaks Local dialect. But when I was at home, I'll speak Mandarin. There are a lot of difference between Sichuan dialect and Mandarin, the tones and the words. So sometimes I'm a little bit confused when I speaks to my parents after I came back home. They may not understand what I said.

Further more, young people will use different words and ways to talk to each other, and I think this is very similar to the story in the book.. And my parent can barely understand, because they hardly ever surf the internet.

So these are the big differences between my parents and I.

People use Mandarin in formal situations. We always use some more formal word to people. For instance, we use more polite words to call elders.  We don't use dirty words and slangs in formal situations.

Chinese is spoken by the largest population in the world. And it is also becoming more and more popular. I'm very glad to be in America, with my Chinese Culture background,  to experience a new culture and a brand-new lifestyle!
